Can Gary Doer's NDP Government Build a Bridge?
Great question. In 2005, Gary Doer announced the expansion and improvement of the 18th Street bridge. Result - no action.
In 2006, he proudly announced the construction of two new bridges for 18th Street rather than expanding the old bridge. He also promised to have the first new bridge completed by 2008. Result - a bridge opening a full year behind schedule and a project already $13 million over budget.
With his self-imposed deadline of building two new bridges for 2009 passed, we had to ask - can Gary Doer's NDP Government build the 18th Street bridges in less time than it took to complete the Golden Gate Bridge?
The Challenge
Construction of the 2.7 km Golden Gate Bridge began in January 1933 and was completed by April 1937 - a total of 52 months.
We challenge Gary Doer's NDP Government to build the 18th Street bridges (spanning 100 meters over the Assiniboine River) in less than 52 months. Work on the bridges began in October 2006 - only 30 months remaining!
Time Remaining for Mr. Doer and the NDP to Beat the Challenge
